SICILY. Syracuse. Second Democracy, 466-405 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 22 mm, 16.87 g, 12 h), obverse die signed by Eu(menes?), reverse die signed by Eukleidas, circa 415-405. Charioteer driving quadriga galloping to left, holding kentron in his right hand and reins in his left; above, Nike flying right to crown the charioteer with wreath held in both hands; below the horses, EY; in exergue, two dolphins facing each other. Rev. ΣY[PAKOΣIΟИ] Head of Arethousa to left, wearing hook-shaped earring and necklace; below neck truncation, ΕΥ; around, four dolphins. Fischer-Bossert, Coins, 27o = Tudeer 27l (this coin, V10/R18). HGC 2, 1328. SNG ANS 260 (same dies). SNG Ashmolean 1994 (same dies). SNG Lockett 962 (same dies). Beautifully toned and with an excellent pedigree. Struck on a slightly short flan and from a somewhat worn obverse die, otherwise, about very fine.
